Regardless of the program or programs being implemented, they all depend upon educators who make a concerted effort to build a relationship with their students. To synthesize Cotton (2001), the communication is centered on authentic empathy, persistence in holding students to high standards, and a willingness to teach students preventatively and through difficult moments as they occur.
